The ToolsOnAir team is looking forward to meeting you again in person at NAB 2025 in Las Vegas from April 6-9.

What’s new for NAB 2025 – Capture Solutions

We are pleased to announce the launch of the 2025.2 versions of just:in mac, just:in mac lite, and just:in mac lite NDI – the most versatile capture solutions for macOS available for the high-performance Apple silicon M1-M4 hardware.

At ToolsOnAir, we constantly strive to innovate, providing broadcasters, post-production professionals, and media enterprises with the most efficient, scalable, and user-friendly tools available.

With new and enhanced features, improved performance, and expanded integrations, the 2025.2 releases of the just:in mac solutions line provide even greater control over your capture process – from multi-camera or live productions to cloud-based and remote workflows.

This release introduces two new Container Types, Classic QuickTime and Harmonized QuickTime, designed to streamline growing file workflows for MOV containers within Adobe Premiere Pro 25.x and Blackmagic Design DaVinci Resolve 19.x.

NEW – Classic QuickTime: This MOV-based container type enables Adobe Premiere Pro users to manage growing files with the same efficiency as with MXF containers. Files expand seamlessly within the timeline, allowing for simple extension through drag-and-drop functionality. Classic QuickTime is available for HD-based Capture Presets.

NEW – Harmonized QuickTime: just:in mac 2025.2 is currently the only macOS-based multichannel capture solution offering native growing file support for DaVinci Resolve within the MOV container. This integration enhances workflow efficiency, making it an ideal companion for any DaVinci Resolve 19.x editing system. Harmonized QuickTime is available for HD-based Capture Presets.

NEW – Multi Just Control Support: with this update, multiple Just Control applications can now connect simultaneously to a single Just In Engine and Channel. This improvement extends access beyond the capture operator, enabling multiple users and machines to connect and monitor production in real time. It opens the door to more efficient workflows, fostering improved collaboration and oversight.

ENHANCED – SRT and UDP Audio Channel Support: the new release of just:in mac 2025 enhances our industry-leading capture solution. This update marks a substantial advancement in SRT and UDP support, now enabling the processing of up to 16 channels of discrete audio. Furthermore, just:in mac 2025 delivers notable improvements in performance and stability for SRT and UDP recording workflows. This enhancement solidifies just:in mac 2025 as the premier capture solution on the macOS platform within the professional broadcast market, offering unparalleled SRT and UDP recording capabilities.

ENHANCED – ProRes 4444 XQ Support: just:in mac v.2025 also expands codec support with the addition of ProRes 4444 XQ, further enhancing compatibility with a wide range of codecs and containers.

ENHANCED – REST API: the robustness of the REST API was improved in this version and third-party integration enhancements were implemented. Enjoy a more effective and responsive application that ensures that your capture process runs smoothly, even during demanding broadcasts.

What’s new for NAB 2025 – Playout Solutions

At NAB 2025, we will announce version 2025.1 of our playout solutions, exclusively supporting Apple silicon. By fully transitioning to the Apple silicon platform, we ensure optimal performance, stability, and compatibility with the latest advancements. Nevertheless, we will, of course, continue to support our customers who still have certified Intel machines running qualified versions of just:live and just:play.

NEW – Rewritten Processing Pipeline: the new version 2025.1 introduces an entirely new low-latency processing pipeline, significantly reducing the delay for most finished actions. This means that tasks such as jumping to the next item in just:play, starting or stopping media in just:live, or changing properties are reflected on-air much more quickly. Additionally, if an input source is too slow, such as when playing a movie from network-attached storage with an insufficient connection – the last valid frame will now be repeated until frames can be provided at the correct frame rate.

NEW – Support for HTML-based graphics: just:play/live 2025.1 is set to revolutionize on-air graphics by introducing dynamic HTML Graphics Template Rendering Support on macOS. This new feature seamlessly integrates with leading web-native platforms such as singular.live, Viz Flowics and SPX offering broadcasters and live event producers more flexibility and creative control than ever before. This seamlessly integrates with the graphics capabilities our customers have been using since day one. Whether it’s a simple station ID overlay or complex, animated, multilayer real-time graphics created with our Composition Builder application, the process remains the same. Simply paste the URL of the HTML graphics into an available graphics track, allowing our playout engine to receive the HTML graphics output from one of the supported platforms. Using the solution’s web-based user interface, you can create or modify graphics on air in real-time.

ENHANCED – Support for mixed frame rate: since the release of our first playout engine, it was possible to mix movies using a different container format, compression, pixel sizes and aspect ratio. We also allowed movies in progressive or interlaced, independent of the field order. The only limitation was, that the frame rate of the movie had to match the frame rate of the channel. This restriction has been fully lifted with v2025.1 meaning, that any video encoded with a “standard” broadcast timebase can be played on any channel. In the Library we colourise movies which do not match the channel frame rate yellow to indicate the operator, that a frame conversion will be applied, once the movie is scheduled. And of course, during preview and trimming and once the movie has been scheduled in the rundown, the correct duration based on the channel frame rate will be shown in the Preview window, the Workbench and the Inspector.

NEW – Color Space and HDR: in previous versions, playback was tied to the Rec.709 color space, regardless of the channel format. Version 2025.1 now fully supports Rec.601, Rec.709, and Rec.2020 color spaces depending on the selected channel output format, where only the valid color spaces for the selected format are enabled, with the default color space for that format automatically applied. Using a HDR capable hardware and selecting a UHD 10-bit format, it is also possible to play out in HDR HLG or HDR PQ, which includes the ability to switch to a HDR HLG/PQ live signal.

For best SDR to HDR and HDR to SDR conversion we added some additional settings which allow to define the maximum brightness of your movies, and how the tone mapping is done. To enjoy the improved video quality while using our user interfaces, we improved the quality of our On Air windows not only in the Multi Viewer, but also in the dedicated playout user interfaces just:live and just:play.

ENHANCED – Single (Buffered) Live Input method: in this new version, we refactored the buffered switch-to-live method compatible with video devices from AJA and BMD, as well as all supported streaming formats, including NDI®, SRT, and UDP. This new method significantly reduces the delay added to the incoming signal when using the Buffered Input method, decreasing it from nearly 3 seconds to less than 12 frames. At the same time, it enhances stability and adds new features, such as the ability to view the incoming live signal in the On-Air preview while playing out.

NEW – Online License Activation Process: version 2025.1 introduces the new Online License Activation Process to our playout solutions. One of the biggest benefits of this new online license activation method is its flexibility for multi-location companies. Whether operating across different offices, production sites, or live event locations worldwide, organizations can dynamically allocate their licenses as needed, ensuring optimal utilization of resources. Additionally, in the event of unexpected hardware failure, a license can be quickly reassigned to a replacement system, minimizing downtime and keeping critical workflows running—without the need for external support or manual on-site intervention.

NEW – HTTP REST API: in addition to the TCP/IP & XML-based communication, all playout channels now automatically publish an HTTP REST API. This includes a new web Socket end-point to connect to a web socket, for bidirectional async messaging and notifications. Through our Configuration window, a Swagger-based documentation can be accessed, which provides all the information needed to control a playout channel or to receive notifications.
