  • The XML patch now has an additional “No update on error” property. When enabled, if the XML cannot be updated (file not found, file locked, invalid XML etc.) processing is disabled, so any previous XML is retained and no updates are performed internally until the next time valid XML can be loaded. This may useful for certain scenarios where for example the XML is read from shared storage and there may be collisions during updates where a background process in currently updating the file on the storage leading to read errors.

  • This build of Composition Builder supports custom icons and Quick Look previews for .composition documents on macOS 15 Sequoia and higher. When you run Composition Builder, you should see a notification from macOS that an extension has been added to the system. After this, open “System Settings”, then select “General” and “Login Items & Extensions”. Then in the “Extensions” section, locate “Quick Look” and click the “Info” (i) icon to the right. In the pane that appears, locate and ensure that “Composition Builder” is enabled. After the next system re-boot, all icons and previews should appear in Finder and in ToolsOnAir Apps as expected.

  • Added a new "Digital Time (with separators)" component under "Date/Time". This allows for "blinking" seperators (e.g. the ":" character).
  • When editing a component's name in the component tree view hitting the enter key ends the edit and updates the component's name instead of moving to a new line.
  • Fixed an issue after scrolling the components view where the component / attributes were not visually aligned with the timeline / keyframes.
  • Fixed a bug where performing a "Save As..." and choosing to overwrite the current file instead of giving it a new name resulted in a file with 0 bytes, thus destroying the original file.
  • Changing the default composition format in the preferences is now reflected immediately when creating a new document instead of after restarting Composition Builder.
  • The underlying compositions saved by Composition Builder and played in Just Play or Just Live are now significantly optimized to use a much smaller number of patches, resulting in improved memory consumption and rendering performance.
  • Added a new "Upgrade Components" item to the "File" menu. This performs additional optimization on the underlying compositions saved by Composition Builder and played in Just Play or Just Live.
  • Removed the option to export a Quartz Composer file. Now Composition Builder only saved composition files.
  • When moving a component it now snaps to horizontal and vertical rulers. Previously, a component would only snap to the nearest vertical or horizontal ruler, but not both at the same time.
  • It is no longer possible to drag a keyframe "out" of the composition (below zero or beyond the composition's duration).
  • Hit-testing now respects a component's rotation, making it possible to scale a rotated component by dragging one of its "handles".
  • When selecting components by dragging out a selection rectangle in the main view, those components that are selected are now visually marked in the main view.
  • When selecting an item in the media library its poster frame image is now displayed in the pop-up preview.
  • The "transport" controls in the library's pop-up preview (e.g. play) now work correctly.
  • The components tree now includes an extra "kf" button to create or removed keyframes for a component or attribute. Simply move the CTI in the timeline to the desired position and click the "kf" button for a given attribute to toggle a keyframe. For a component, the "kf" button will toggle keyframes for all currently animated attributes.
  • Labels in the inspector now have a "tooltip" displayed when hovering over them with the mouse. This may be helpful for long attribute labels that are too long to display in the inspector.
  • Fixed a bug that caused the main window to be displayed "strangely" for a second or two when opening a composition.
  • Relative paths for XML, movie and images are now supported by Composition Builder. Additionally there is a new "Make Paths Relative" item in the "File" menu that will automatically find and replace absolute paths with relative paths, assuming the file and the composition are both located on the same volume.
  • Added a new "Embed Resources" item to the "File" menu. This will automatically locate any XML, movie and image files referenced within the composition, copy them into the composition file and make the file paths relative to the composition file. This can obviously lead to much large composition files, but makes copying much easier as only the composition file needs to be copied and not the associated resources.
  • The scrollwheel / trackpad is now active for the components tree and timeline ruler.
  • Fixed several issues related to undo/redo, particularly after inserting or deleting components.
  • Components that download data (e.g. XML or RSS) are now updated in the main view once then data has been loaded. Previously it required the CTI to be moved for such components to be visually updated.

  • The way that a composition’s poster frame is defined has been refined. Previously when saving a composition the current position in the timeline was used to generate the poster frame. Now a specific position can be defined by dragging the CTI in the timeline and clicking the “Poster Frame” button on the toolbar. This position will be saved with the composition, meaning that the next time a composition is opened and saved the same point in time will be used to generate the thumbnail. Additionally it is possible in the inspector to define a fixed poster frame by dropping an image file, thus overriding the automatically generated poster frame.
  • Composition Builder can now natively read and preview MXF movie files.
  • The mouse pointer is now context sensitive, for example when moving over a component’s “resize handles”.
  • Fixed issues with the “Font Panel” so that the correct font is always shown for the selected component.
  • Fixed a bug that meant that saving and opening a composition would sometimes show an incorrect format (e.g. SD PAL instead of HD 1080i25).
  • The tab key now moves to the correct field in the inspector.

Composition Builder 4.0.0.B1.5 Release Notes

  • This is a Beta preview release and therefore main exhibit bugs and/or unexpected behaviour.
  • All compositions now have a specific timebase (frame-rate) in addition to the resolution. For example, previously a composition was specified as “HD 1080i”, now it would be “HD 1080i25”. When creating a new composition the same broadcast modes are available as for a channel in just:connect. The timeline now reflects the number of frames per second.
  • When dragging the CTI in the timeline or playing the composition, the timecode is now displayed as an overlay over the composition’s view. Additionally the timecode is now displayed in SMTPE format (i.e. 00:00:00:00) instead of seconds.
  • There are new menu commands to jump to the next or previous frame and the start or end of the composition.
  • You can now define a movie as the background for a composition by dragging and dropping a movie file over the “Image / Movie” in the “Background, Safe Areas & Rulers” group in the Inspector. When playing the composition the movie file is also played to simulate the composition being played out over a video input. This can be useful to judge how a composition will look when composited over different kinds of video material. Note that the movie will be looped automatically, and that only a still image from the movie will be displayed when dragging the CTI in the timeline to preserve performance.
  • Fixed a bug that resulted in empty (white) QuickLook thumbnails (display in Finder) being saved when the CTI was at the start of the composition.
  • The preview window is now a “floating” window, meaning it will always be shown above all other Composition Builder windows.
  • Resolved a bug that meant the composition view was not rendered at all on systems with two or more graphics cards (e.g. MacBook Pro systems with both discrete graphic and Intel HD cards).

Composition Builder 4.0.0.B1.4 Release Notes

  • This is a Beta preview release and therefore main exhibit bugs and/or unexpected behaviour.
  • The rendering code has been reworked to make rendering and playback in the workbench (i.e. in the editor, not the preview) significantly faster.
  • The library and inspector views are now integrated into the main window as with Just Play and Just Live. As with Just Play and Just Live they can be hidden or undocked into separate windows. The window’s layout is also saved and restored between Composition Builder sessions.
  • The “distribute” toolbar menu items are now only enabled when two or more components are selected in the workbench, not for a single component.
  • When playing the composition from the workbench once the end of the composition is reached the playback is stopped. It can be started again by hitting the spacebar or clicking the play icon on the toolbar.
  • The “Safe Areas” overlay has been improved to use the standard EBU designated areas and two different colours to differentiate the action safe and graphics safe areas. Additionally there is a new checkbox in the inspector to show/hide the overlay.
  • Rulers have been improved with additional tools in the inspector to add and delete rulers and edit them. It is now possible to enter exactly a ruler’s position in pixels, for example. Additionally there is a checkbox to show/hide the rulers.
  • When moving or resizing components with rulers enabled the positions are snapped to the rulers.
  • The options to show or hide the safe areas and rulers are now saved with the composition.
  • Fixed a bug when dropping a component onto the workbench that contained references to fonts not installed on the system. Now the fonts are substituted with the system font and a warning is displayed.
  • Resolved an issue that prevented the preview window functioning correctly for certain compositions.
  • Fixed several issues related to thumbnail images (those shown in Finder for a composition) for certain compositions. In some cases the colours were corrupt, in others only the background was corrupt. Additionally not all component attributes were taken into account when generating the thumbnails (e.g. component rotation and opacity).
  • Fixed layout errors in inspector for component parameters with long names.
  • Resolved issues with component parameters when selecting multiple components in the workbench.
  • Added the “Extras” folder to the installation DMG with resources required by the standard components.

Composition Builder 3.2.7 Release Notes

  • FR 41: Die Kindelemente werden nicht mehr aufgeklappt und Elemente werden am Ende hinzugefügt wenn am unteren freien Bereich gedroped wird. Das die Drop Operation nur am vorderen Teil der OutlineView akzeptiert wird, liegt daran das ansonsten das Control dies als eine Drop Operation als Kindelement versteht. Das ist leider ein Problem der OutlineView wenn sie Kindelemente hat. Man kann in XCode dasselbe Verhalten beobachten.
  • FR 118: Namen werden im Inspector vergeben. Das XML Exportformat wurde angepasst und enthält pro Stop-frame ein Dictionary mit den keys "time-point" und "title"
  • FR 168: Das ziehen eines Stop-frames ins negative ist nicht mehr möglich und wird abgefangen. Der Rest ist leider so nicht umsetzbar. Bei Stopframes gibt es keine Selektionsmöglichkeit wie es sie bei Keyframes gibt. Die Problematik ist hier das die unterschiedlichen grafischen Elemente der Timeline auf dieselben Events reagieren würden (Backspace zum Löschen von Keyframes, einer Component und eines Stop-frames).
