[JIL] Growing File Workflow with Adobe Premiere Pro v.5.5

As stated in earlier sections of the user manual, Just In linux supports growing file workflows with Adobe Premiere Pro. A workflow overview and important considerations to keep in mind can be found below.

Generally, all supported container types in Just In linux are written in an “open” or “growing” format. However, it is important to note that Adobe Premiere Pro officially only supports selected codecs for growing files within an MXF wrapper. Supported Codecs for growing files within an MXF wrapper

Just In linux supports following MXF-based codecs for growing files in Adobe Premiere Pro:

• AVC-I Class 50/100

• XDCAM HD422

Supported Codecs for growing files within an MOV container

Just In linux supports following MOV-based codecs for growing files in Adobe Premiere Pro:

• ProRes422, Proxy, LT and HQ

Important Considerations

Please ensure that you consider the following:

Preferences

Most importantly, please ensure that the "Refresh growing Files Every X seconds" setting is configured to 30 seconds or a higher value. This recommendation is provided by Adobe and has proven to be the most suitable duration for maintaining a stable and efficient workflow. Customers typically opt for 30 or 60 seconds in this setting. Additionally, it is necessary to enable the "Automatically refresh growing files" option. You can locate these settings in the Adobe Premiere Pro “Preferences” under the Media Tab.

Closed Captions Data and Markers

Please note that when working with growing files, Closed Captions data and Markers are inaccessible, as Adobe Premiere Pro reads this data only when the file is closed.

Workflow Example

To illustrate the growing file workflow, let's initiate a recording using the XDCAM HD422 Capture Preset and capture it to a shared storage location.

Once the recording has started, please wait for a few seconds before importing the growing file into Adobe Premiere Pro and loading it into the timeline.

The editing process can now start, as the file will be continuously updated in the background. The editor can easily extend the file within the timeline by using drag-and-drop. Once the file has updated itself based on the specified media refresh value in the Preferences pane, move the cursor to the end of the timeline to extend it accordingly.

After the recording is complete, the file within the Project Bin folder will revert to the default font style, indicating that it is no longer a growing file. At this point, the timeline can be extended once more to accommodate the last updates.
